Focus on the 'Old World'

01 November 2011

After delving into New World Wines in last month’s diary entry – this month I am reading more about the Old World wines. The term ‘old world’ refers primarily to wine made in Europe and is used to describe general differences in viticulture between those of the ‘old world’ and that of the ‘new world.’

Richard Hill's Q & A

Do you know enough about the wines to match them with rugby positions?

Sadly, my knowledge would still need to improve dramatically to make such a bold selection. It would it be like picking a team and picking your mates first as they are the only people you know! There is plenty of time to carry on responsibly tasting!!
Funniest thing you’ve heard said at the bottom of a Ruck/maul?

In one of my early international appearances I had a club colleague and friend who was in the opposition and known for his physicality, hover all 8 studs of his boots above my body and gave me a fierce warning should he find me on the wrong side again they were mine.
Have you always played rugby as a Flanker or as a different position earlier in your career?

Mini rugby meant that I started in the front row of the 4 man scrum, but especially when playing up age grades I played for my junior club, Salisbury in whatever position needed. So did have the odd game on wing, full back, and even one at fly half! My school days were as a No.8. In my first year at College after school, in the important games I wasn't good enough to get in backrow so had to do my stint in the 2nd row! When I joined Saracens, is when I moved to flanker, as at the time I was deemed too small.
Which was your most nerve-racking game?

In terms of build up, it would be without doubt the World Cup Final. Every night I was losing sleep at night, with the thoughts of being the person who could drop a ball that would cost the team. Fortunately, I was able to grab power naps throughout the day. Once the match started, it was a case of getting on and doing the job I had trained for. Unbelievably, even heading in to extra time, the team as a whole were remarkably calm and focussed.
Who will be the dark horses of this year’s World Cup?

Genuinely don't believe there will be a dark horse to win the World Cup. France would have been my outside bet before the 6 Nations. They have had some good results in New Zealand against the hosts. But will have to perform better than their 6 Nations matches. Looking forward to seeing if Georgia can go that little step further after narrow loss to Ireland and Russia's first appearance at a World Cup.
